European Statistics Competition 2027 — Cyprus National Phase

Online

Planned

Cyprus won this thing outright in June. Registration for the next round closes on 30 November 2026, and most of the island's schools have not noticed. The European Statistics Competition (ESC) is a team data competition for secondary-school students, run nationally by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (CYSTAT) with the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society. The 2027 edition is the 10th, and it is the first one Cyprus enters as a defending European champion. What it actually is, because the name undersells it. Teams of 2–3 students from the same school, supervised by a teacher, compete in two assignments against real official statistics. It is a datathon with a communication round bolted on — not a quiz.

  • Assignment one is a timed online test on statistical reasoning and data interpretation.
  • Assignment two is an open analysis task: teams work a dataset and present the result, with the European stage requiring a video plus a making-of document reflecting on a set statistical question.
Two categories, by school level.
  • Category A — Lyceum (upper secondary, roughly 16–18).
  • Category B — Gymnasium (lower secondary, roughly 14–16).
The Cyprus timetable as published.
  • Registration: 20 October – 30 November 2026. This is the only hard deadline that matters right now.
  • Topic for the second assignment published: December 2026.
  • First assignment testing: 12 January 2027 (Gymnasium) and 13 January 2027 (Lyceum).
  • First-assignment results: 18 January 2027.
  • Second assignment submission: 19 January – 1 March 2027.
  • Jury presentations: 10 March 2027 (Gymnasium), 17 March 2027 (Lyceum).
  • Top five teams announced: 19 March 2027.
  • National award ceremony: 30 March 2027.
Then it goes European. Each country nominates up to two teams per age group to the European stage, where an international jury judges the videos. Eurostat announces winners in each age category, and the winning teams travel to the award ceremony in Luxembourg at the end of June 2027. Prizes at European level are €400 gift cards, trophies, diplomas and Eurostat materials. Why this is on a hackathon calendar. Because in June 2026 a team called STATRUN, from Laniteio Gymnasium in Limassol, won the 14–16 category of the European final — the first time any Cypriot team has won the ESC — against a field of roughly 9,100 teams from 22 countries. Their entry was a two-minute video building a statistical portrait of the Cypriot population out of official data. That is a better result than anything the island has posted at a robotics or informatics olympiad, and it was achieved by two or three teenagers and a teacher with no prize fund, no sponsor and no venue. The pipeline that produced it is open for six more weeks. It is also the cheapest entry point on this calendar. No fee, no code requirement, no travel until you win. The skills it actually rewards — reading a dataset honestly, noticing what the numbers do not say, and explaining it to a non-specialist in under three minutes — are the ones every AI and data role on the island advertises for and almost no school competition tests. How to enter. Through the national competition portal at gov.cy/esc. Registration is by the supervising teacher. Contact: esc-cy@cystat.mof.gov.cy, +357 22602184. Format note: registration, the first assignment and the second-assignment submission are all conducted online, which is why this is listed as an online event — but the jury presentations in March and the national award ceremony on 30 March are held in person in Cyprus. The Cyprus-specific phase dates above are as published by the national organisers; the start and end times shown are nominal, since CYSTAT publishes dates rather than clock times for these stages. Open to students at officially recognised educational institutions of the Republic of Cyprus.
