Cyprus Computer Society submits 33 recommendations on the National AI Strategy 2032

The Cyprus Computer Society (CCS) has submitted 33 recommendations aimed at strengthening Cyprus' National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2032, calling for a sharper focus on practical implementation and on outcomes that can actually be measured for citizens, businesses, public administration and the economy.

At the centre of the submission is a call for a single costed national implementation plan — one that sets out the required investments, the funding sources, the delivery timelines and the spending attached to each key programme. The CCS also pushed for clearer accountability inside the proposed AI governance system, asking who exactly is responsible for implementing the strategy, monitoring the budget, responding when projects fall short, and answering for missed national targets.

On skills, the society proposed breaking the strategy's headline target of roughly 3,000 trained AI professionals into specific expertise categories — researchers, engineers, data professionals and sector-specific talent — rather than treating it as a single undifferentiated number. It further argued that public procurement should be used deliberately as a lever to support Cypriot startups and SMEs, and that economic impact should be assessed more broadly than by counting unicorns.

The CCS was explicit that success should not be judged by the number of initiatives, pilot projects or programmes launched. Instead it pointed to higher productivity, better public services, a stronger AI workforce, successful technology companies, increased exports, commercialised research and trustworthy AI deployment as the measures that matter. The submission also asked for a dedicated governance framework covering generative AI and AI agents, and stressed human-centred AI — algorithmic bias assessments, accessibility requirements, and wider participation from women and underrepresented groups.

The Cyprus Computer Society is a familiar name in the island's tech-competition calendar, running the national Cyprus Cyber Security Challenge and the WRO Cyprus robotics final, which take place this year on 19 September in Nicosia.
