150+ deep-tech startups and almost €1bn in research money: Cyprus maps its lab-to-market gap
Cyprus now counts more than 150 deep-tech startups — health and biotech, energy and climate, applied AI, robotics, defence and space — backed by almost €1 billion in competitive research and innovation funding over the past decade.
The numbers come from a year-long mapping by VC firm 33East, presented by Dionysis Partsinevelos at the 7th DeepTech CY Meetup on 23 September — the first edition hosted inside a university, at the University of Cyprus Faculty of Engineering.
The headline figures
- 150+ deep-tech startups on the island
- ~€1bn in competitive R&I funding in ten years
- More EU research funding per head than any other member state under Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe
- 7 centres of excellence and 22 ERC grants hosted in Cyprus
- Deep tech is now roughly one third of European VC investment — double its share a decade ago
The gap
About half of the mapped companies have grant support from RIF or EU programmes, but only a smaller group has gone on to raise private venture capital. The panel — UCY's Margarita Chli and Anastasia Constantinou, The Cyprus Institute's Anixi Antonakoudi, Cyprus Seeds' Maria Markidou Georgiadou and Orom AI's Charis Christofi — pointed at spin-out rules, IP ownership and researchers' equity as the brakes still on.
Why it matters if you hack: if your hackathon prototype has real science behind it, the island already has the labs, the grant funnel and a growing investor bench. The meetup is grassroots and open — a good next room after demo day.
