300 million players, one booth: ten-plus Cyprus studios went to Comic Con under a single name — and gamescom 2027 applications are next
The Cyprus game industry stopped introducing itself company by company this weekend. At Cyprus Comic Con 2026, held at the Cyprus State Fair in Nicosia on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, the Cyprus Game Makers Association (CYGMA) gathered more than ten game companies operating on the island behind a single brand — Games from Cyprus — in Hall 6, booth 784.
The pitch was a quiz, which is the right instinct. Rather than explain the sector, the booth asked visitors a question: which of the games you already know were made on the island? The honest answer surprises most people here. Cubic Games' Pixel Gun has passed 300 million players. Ducky's Melon Sandbox is past 150 million installs. Owlcat Games works out of Paphos on Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, and Unfrozen builds Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era from Limassol. None of that reads as a small-island portfolio, and almost none of it is visible to the Cypriot public.
CYGMA also took the stage. A talk ran on Sunday 4 October at 17:00 on the Limit Break Gaming Stage in Hall 5, alongside the booth. The convention halls were open 10:00–21:00 on both days, with the outdoor festival running later and opening on the Friday evening.
Two concrete things to watch, both flagged from the floor. The first is a proposed programme called G3 – Games Go Global. The second is more immediate: applications for the Cyprus delegation at gamescom 2027 open soon, with details to follow. If you are an indie developer on the island, that second one is the sentence to diary — a national delegation is the cheapest route onto the floor at Cologne, and the application windows for these things are short.
Why it belongs on this list. Read it next to September: Cyprus handed out its first game industry awards in Limassol on 17 September, and the flagship competition at the next Youth Tech Fest in February is a Roblox Games Hackathon for ages 9 and up. A trade association, an awards night, a youth pipeline and a shared booth at the island's biggest pop-culture event is what a sector looks like when it stops being a list of studios that happen to share a tax jurisdiction. The gap it is closing is specifically the local one — the games are already global; the recognition at home is the part that was missing.
