14 challenges, 48 hours, free entry: the NASA Space Apps Challenge has a Limassol node again — 14–15 November

The biggest hackathon on the planet is back on the Cyprus map, and this year it does not collide with anything. The NASA Space Apps Challenge 2026 runs on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 November under the theme "The Next Frontier", simultaneously at 450+ local events worldwide — and Limassol is listed as one of the in-person nodes.

What it is, for anyone who has only heard the name. NASA and its Space Agency Partners publish a set of challenges — 14 for 2026 — each written by subject-matter experts and tied to genuinely open datasets. Teams of 2 to 6 people (six is the hard cap) pick one and have the weekend to produce something: code, a model, a data visualisation, a design, or a piece of public storytelling. There is no mandated deliverable format, which is the quiet reason non-coders tend to be the difference on winning teams here.

Cost: nothing. The programme is funded by NASA's Science Mission Directorate and the local nodes are volunteer-run. No ticket, no entry fee.

The one deadline to respect. Eligibility for Global Judging requires registration on the official site, and registration stays open through 15 November — technically you can sign up mid-event. Do not. Register against the Limassol local event specifically rather than just the global 2026 edition, otherwise your team and project do not attach to the local node and your submission goes nowhere.

Where, with a caveat. The address carried on the Limassol listing is 1 Ioannou Tsirou Street, Limassol 3021 — the IMS Private School campus, which has hosted the local edition in previous years. Local hosts publish their own running order on the event page, and start times routinely shift a few hours either side of the nominal Saturday-morning opening, so check the page before you travel rather than trusting the global schedule.

Why the November date matters locally. Cyprus' hackathon season is bunched at the end of the month: the BoC Fintech Hackathon 7.0 runs 27–29 November with €16,000 in prizes, and Competen.CY 2026 is on 28 November. Space Apps sits a full fortnight earlier. That makes it the only free, open, theme-unrestricted build weekend on the island in mid-November — and a cheap dress rehearsal for the two paid-attention events that follow.

And the data is worth more than the placing. Cyprus has fielded Space Apps teams since 2013. Even a team that places nowhere walks away having worked hands-on with NASA's open Earth-observation and planetary datasets — the same raw material behind the space and EO work now being funded locally through C-SpaRC and the Cyprus Space Office. Read the challenge summaries, which are already live, before the Friday night. That hour is the highest-leverage part of the entire weekend.
