Free, one day, AI only: the Zubr Capital Young Hackathon comes back to Cyprus on 24 October
The cheapest route from "I have no idea" to "I pitched an AI product to an investor" is one Saturday in October. The Zubr Capital Young Hackathon returns to Cyprus on 24 October 2026, and this edition drops the general startup brief in favour of AI products only.
Who can apply. University students in Cyprus and early-stage founders. You are not required to arrive with a team or even an idea — the format assembles teams on site and starts from a hypothesis. Entry is free, registration is required, via league.zubrcapital.com/hackathon-cyprus.
What the day is actually for. Zubr compresses the opening months of a startup into a single sitting: find a problem worth solving with AI, test whether anyone has it, build a working prototype, work out where the thing breaks, then pitch it to investors. Alena Padalnitskaya, writing for the firm, puts the learning objective in terms that are unusually specific for this kind of announcement — participants have to learn "which problems are worth solving with AI, how to test hypotheses, how to assess the solution's limitations." The pressure is the pedagogy: rapid decisions, limited resources, a deadline that does not move.
Why the firm bothers. The framing is a skills gap, and the number behind it is domestic: 43 per cent of Cypriot CEOs named key skills shortages a major threat to their business in 2026. Zubr Capital — a Cyprus-based growth equity firm — runs the Young programme as one of several educational initiatives aimed at getting young professionals comfortable making independent calls in real business conditions rather than in a classroom.
The precedent is the best available guide. The first Cyprus edition ran on 23 October 2025 at the Parklane resort in Limassol, 11:00 to 21:00, with Russian as the working language. Places were capped, applications closed four days ahead of the event, and every applicant sat a short interview before being accepted. Mentors and judges came from Zubr's own investment bench — founder and CEO Oleg Khusaenov, investment director Nikita Krivelevich, investment manager Anna Khechoyan and several partners. The series then ran an AI-focused edition in Almaty on 19 September 2026 that pulled in 130 students and 16 startup teams in a day; Warsaw has hosted one too.
What is still missing. As of writing, the organisers have not published the venue, the running times, the working language for this edition, the prize structure or a registration cut-off. Given that the 2025 edition closed applications early and screened by interview, anyone interested should treat the deadline as several days before 24 October rather than the night before.
The useful bit of timing. This lands five weeks ahead of the BoC Fintech Hackathon 7.0 (27–29 November, IDEA Innovation Centre, €16,000 in prizes) — enough runway to turn a 24 October prototype into a November competition entry, with the investor feedback already collected.
