⚓ Frederick University hackathon takes on port emissions this October

Frederick University hosts the Cyprus edition of the EU-CONEXUS ENABLES Hackathon on 13–14 October 2026, and the theme is now confirmed: “Decarbonising Port Operations through Smart Energy and Digital Twin Solutions”.

It is one of six hackathons running across the EU-CONEXUS European university alliance this year, each tied to a real challenge in a coastal city. Cyprus drew the port one — which, on an island where almost everything arrives by sea, is about as close to home as a challenge brief gets.

Who it is for

• Teams of 3–5 participants, deliberately multidisciplinary.
• Researchers and academic staff, students and early-career innovators, city representatives, industry partners, and NGOs.
• Mentors are drawn from the alliance — the port challenge is mentored by Professor Pablo Vidal (UCV).

The format favours rapid prototyping and cross-sector collaboration rather than pure code output, so a team that pairs engineers with people who understand port logistics or energy policy has a real edge here.
