22 specialties, three days at the State Fair and a seat on the plane to Düsseldorf: SkillsCyprus opens 29 October

Cyprus' largest technical competition is also the one the tech crowd most reliably ignores. The 9th SkillsCyprus National Skills Competition takes over the State Fair in Nicosia from 29 to 31 October 2026, organised by the Cyprus Productivity Centre (KEPA) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.

The format. Individual competitions — not teams — across 22 specialties, judged in working conditions on the floor rather than by pitch or slide deck. Eligibility is capped by age: competitors must be up to 24 years old, meaning born after 31 December 2001. Alongside the competitors, KEPA recruits experienced professionals as Expert supporters to set and judge the tasks, plus volunteers to run the three days.

What is actually at stake. Not the prizes, though the organisers advertise those. The real prize is selection for the national team for EuroSkills 2027 in Düsseldorf, Germany — the continental championship, where Cyprus competes against the vocational-training systems of every other European country. Three days in Nicosia in October is the qualifying round for that.

Why a hackathon calendar carries it. Because the question Cyprus keeps asking itself — whether the workforce can keep up with the AI and fintech ambitions set out in the national strategy's 2032 horizon — gets answered in vocational training long before it gets answered at a summit. SkillsCyprus is the only event on the island that puts the technical-and-vocational pipeline on a public floor and scores it. The full list of the 22 specialties is published on the official site's Ειδικότητες (Specialties) page; if you want to know which digital and technical trades are in this year's line-up, that page is the authority, and we are not going to guess at it here.

Going. The competition is open to the public and free to attend — three days of watching people be good at difficult things, with no ticket and no registration. Expressions of interest from prospective competitors, experts and volunteers go through skillscyprus.gov.cy, which also carries the submission deadlines and the prize detail.

The crowded Saturday. The competition's closing day, 31 October, is also DevFest Cyprus 2026 at the University of Nicosia — two very different pictures of Cypriot technical skill happening a few kilometres apart on the same morning. The one at the State Fair is the free one.
